It’s NOT “Send Money by Email!”

People who think you can send money by email have it partially right and partially wrong. They think that just because you can use your computer to send money that you’re actually using your email program to send money by email.  That’s not true.

The place where email comes into the process is that the company that actually does the ‘sending’ part, they send you an email notification to assure you that the process is moving along properly. But you can’t actually send money by email.

The companies that do it very tightly sequence the online money remittance process. They’re very good about keeping you, the customer, advised about the progress of your transaction. They’ll always send you an email to let you know that you sent the money by email and sometimes they’ll send you an email to let you know that your recipient has received it successfully too.

The difference is really just a linguistic technicality. The result of it is still pure convenience for the customer.

Imagine many years ago, before the Internet, you had to send money physically by courier of some kind. That’s the situation that made highway robbery so popular, i.e. there was money going back and forth in stagecoaches all the time.

Now that we’ve got the Internet just about everywhere (in the US anyway) you can do all kinds of transactions via a computer keyboard and it’s a lot more secure. So, in that sense you could say that you can send money by email even though you’re really not. It would be more accurate to say you’re transferring money via the Internet.

But you certainly can use email to let people know that you are sending them money. That’s always good news. If you told most people in the US that you were going to send money to them by email, they would still know what you mean.

You could just as easily say “I’m going to send money to you by keyboard” (meaning your computer keyboard) our “I’m going to send money to you by my fingers.” Of course that’s a little ridiculous but the point is the same.

The point is, email is super fast and so is transferring money using one of the Internet based services that do it via the Internet. If you want to send money to someone really quick, you can call it ‘send money by email’ if you want. That’s between you and the person getting the money. However you do it, it’s super fast and convenient if it has anything to do with the Internet.

Send Money by Email

When you send money by email you are not actually sending your money via your email account. That would not be secure. The money is not actually transferred by e-mail. Only the instructions to retrieve the funds are. Here’s how it generally works:

  • The sender opens an online banking session and chooses the recipient, the amount to send, as well as a security question and answer. The funds are debited instantly, usually for a surcharge.
  • An e-mail or text message is then sent to the recipient, with instructions on how to retrieve the funds and answer the question, via a secure website.
    • If the recipient is subscribed to online banking at one of the participating institutions, the funds are deposited instantly at no extra charge.
    • If the recipient’s deposit account is not at one of the participating institutions or not subscribed to online banking at all, the funds are deposited within three to five business days, and a surcharge is deducted from the amount received.

There are more convenient, faster and very reliable ways to do online money transfer that are more advantageous than if you send money by email.

Some companies in this business have been in the money remittance business for over 20 years, have served millions of satisfied customers, and currently offer online money transfer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

What are some of the advantage of transferring money this way vs. moving money by email?

  • Speed: Your funds can be received by Cash Card, Bank Deposit, Home Delivery or Cash Pickup within minutes.
  • Trust & Reliability: You are guaranteed that your remittance will be securely sent to your recipient. Plus, many of these companies have been in business a long time and have millions of satisfied customers.
  • They’re there when you need them and they pride themselves on delivering exceptional customer service. So whenever you need help, they’re there for you.
  • Great value: Spend less to send more. These companies offer the best exchange rates, plus low rates that save you money.

I used to send money by email, but now I use online services.
